Oh No!
Room 5 has been struck by a vomiting bug.
So it's time for a couple of gentle reminders
- If your child is complaining of a funny tummy please keep them at home. There are 24 kids in room 5 which means 24 families that bugs can spread to - and 2 of those families have new born babies. I understand the pressures of being a working parent, I am one, but please be considerate of the other working parents in our Room 5 team.
- It's a good time to check that the school has up-to-date contact information. If something happens at school, or your kid becomes unwell, we need to be able to contact you.
- The Ministry Guidelines tend to suggest that kids do not come back to school for 24-48 hours after the last episode of vomiting. Thanks for your help.
- Double check that your child knows how to wash their hands properly.

Whanau Group and PTA
If you are interested in joining the whanau group or the PTA, or even just offering 'part time' assistance, I am sure that they would love the extra support. Let me know and I'll tap a few people on the shoulder. The Whanau group and the PTA are packed with really awesome people and they are always laughing and smiling when I see them.
The Annunciation
The annunciation is when the angel Gabriel came to Mary and gave her the heads up about Jesus.
Gabriel said these very familiar words:

Counting in tens to add
Today we played a silly game. We were in teams of 2. We had to pick up maths equipment with chopsticks and put it in our team circle. When we had cleared the table we had to add up our scores. We had to count in tens to add up our scores. It was hard to add up BUT we had fun. We are going to practice skip counting in tens and adding tens and when we play again it will be a piece of cake.

Life Education
Today we went to visit Bernie and Harold. We learned about the hero and the villain that are in our brains. The villain makes us think and do bad things. When the villain is in charge we feel sad, angry, scared and worried. The hero makes us do and say kind and helpful things. When the hero is in charge we feel happy, excited, kindhearted and friendly. We are all going to try to be heroes in Room 5.
Mr Macmillan, can we please have a starry ceiling and a
screen as big as a wall in Room 5? This classroom rocks!
Birthday Boy Beau got a birthday hug from Harold.
We showed Bernie what different feelings look like.
Some of the kids put on little plays to show what a hero would do
if he saw someone who wasn't having a good day.
Room 5 you are all heroes. Great work this morning.

Saint Patrick and Saint Joseph
Some of this video about Saint Joseph is a bit heavy for kids but is really interesting and informative. How much do you know about Saint Joseph?
We watched this video about Saint Patrick in class. It's a very simplified version of an amazing life but worth the watch. The kids just didn't think it was as funny as me.

Saint Josephs Day
Saint Joseph isn't the most popular Saint - or even talked about very much in the Gospels - but he's pretty important to us at Saint Marys School. Our founder, Saint Mary MacKillop, started the Sisters of Saint Joseph - named for this humble and hard working man/father. You are most welcome to join us to celebrate this special feast day with Room 18 leading the liturgy.
We are very excited to have Bernie and Harold visiting us. Whanau Manuka (Year 2 team) will be talking lots about friendship and empathy. What is a friend? How can we tell how other people are feeling? How do our feelings influence the way we act? Is it ok to feel (angry, sad, frustrated...)? Please, continue these discussions at home with your children.
Kapa Haka
Kapa Haka starts again this week with the patient and talented Matua Koro leading. I will be 'encouraging' ALL children to have a go. We won't know if we like it if we don't try it. Last year, I was lucky enough to be on a panel that was interviewed about Kapa Haka at Saint Marys School. The students in the room happily spoke about their own growth in confidence, the pride they felt being part of this team and the opportunities and skills that Kapa Haka gave them to lead others. What an inspirational bunch.

Lost Property
The school lost property is out of control - we can hardly shut the lid at night. Room 5 children are definitely not innocent! Our bag room is terrible! Clothing, books & lunch boxes spread everywhere. I do the best I can and I have established little routines to help the kids put away their belongings but I just can't spend learning time doing it for them.
24 jerseys, 48 sandals, 24 lunchboxes, 24 drink bottles, 24 towels, 24 togs, 24 school bags... then there's goggles, car seats, scooters, bikes, helmets, PE gear, toys, guitars, ukuleles,... and I haven't even started on the gear we have in our classroom. Our children really have to learn to be a little more responsible for their own things. Here are 2 things, that you can do at home, that will really help us out.
1. Make sure that everything that comes to school has your child's name on it. A hidden piece of purple cotton or the name of your neighbours kid, who left 3 years ago, really does't help me to identify an owner.
2. Make sure that your child has responsibility for packing an unpacking their own school bag at home. This will help them to take a little more responsibility for looking after their own belongings at school. The internet is awash with little checklists and ideas to help. We are teaching our kids to be independent and responsible.
Thanks for your support.

Swimming in the rain
Today it was raining really hard and there were lots of kids who didn't bring their togs - maybe they were worried about getting wet?! Mrs T decided that we were going to have a bit of fun in the rain so we did a bit a swap around. Our kids with no togs went next door and the Room 7 swimmers came with us. We had sooooooo much fun and the water was lovely.
Mrs T taught Room 5 kids how to duck dive this week - now she has trouble keeping them the right way up. Have a look at all of the feet in the air in these photos.
