Year 2 Picnic
I will be meeting with the Year 2 team on Monday night to plan this wonderful event.  More details will follow this week. We will need some parent help and transport.

Rosary
It is the Junior School's turn to host the Rosary on Wednesday morning. You are all most welcome to join us.

All Hallows Eve
There is always quite a bit of debate about 'Halloween' in Catholic Schools.  Halloween is also knows as All Hallows Eve.  'Hallow' is an old english word for 'Saint'.  All Hallows Eve is the vigil before All Saints Day - a Holy Day of Obligation.  All Saints Day is the day that we honour all of God's saints, even those who have not been canonized by the Church. It is a family day of celebration — we celebrate the memory of our family members and friends.  We rejoice that they have reached Heaven and pray for their happiness and for their help.

All Souls Day
This feast day is a loving celebration. It is the day that we especially remember all those who have passed from this life into the next. We stop to remember all who have died especially our relatives and friends. We pray for those who taught us good things and made sacrifices for us. We pray for those who prayed for us while they were on this earth and we pray for the most forgotten souls.

Emmaus
Letter from Bishop Steve
The Emmaus icon will be visiting St Marys Church on Thursday.  The icon is travelling around the Diocese as part of Bishop Steve's 'Hearts Burning' focus.  We are all invited to visit it while it is here and to say a short prayer. Perhaps, a short family visit at drop off/pick up time before you rush off to the next thing.  Bishop Steve's letter is attached above if you would like to know a little more.

Research

Room 5 kids are becoming more and more inquisitive.  They have lots of questions about the world around them and they want answers.  This morning there were lots of questions about animals.  How do fish breathe underwater? How do dogs understand us? How do you train an animal? ...

We decided that the answers must be out there somewhere so I was sent into the book room (thank goodness it's next door) to find books about animals and insects.  Everyone dived in and started researching.  We found some fascinating facts...

When puppies are first born, they can't open their eyes but they can smell their Mum.
Ena

Large spiders can eat fish, mice and birds!
Rhys

A dog can be trained to help you cross the road.
Lachlan

Dogs and cats talk with their bodies.
Mikyla

Dogs that have jobs have to be trained when they are little.
Brydin

When birds crash into windows it's because they see a reflection and don't know that the glass is there.
Thomas

Owls eat insects and rabbits.
Elizabeth

Baby turtles have to look after themselves because the mothers go to the sea before they hatch.
Leighanne

Daddy long legs can't make a web.
Keira

Karearea can fly as fast as a car.
Ryan

A blue crab can eat seaweed and little animals.
Cooper

Not all dogs and cats can run.
Zara

Turtle eggs are buried and the babies have to dig themselves out to go to the sea.

Working Bee
We have a number of jobs on our list ranging from handy-man jobs, spreading cushionfall under the senior playground, maintenance on the senior playground, replacing rotten palings on our boundary fences, repairing the tops of our garden plots, putting up the shade cloth and I am sure there will be plenty more jobs to do. Come along and meet other parents, enjoy a morning tea and a delicious lunch. Children are welcome also. For catering purposes please let the office know if you can assist, even if it is for an hour or two

Hats and shoes

From this week, children are expected to wear their sun hats at break times. If children aren’t wearing a hat they must go under the school verandas. Don't forget your hat!!!!

Mr Macmillan picked up three pairs of sandals and a few odd ones in the playground, which suggests children are leaving school without sandals on. Room 5 children wear the uniform with pride and always leave the room fully dressed. If you play on the field after school, please remind your kids that shoes need to be put back on before walking out the gate.

There are lots of shiny new sandals, uniforms and hats at school. Please, please, please name all of your gear. There are about 150 kids in the junior school and a large number of those kids have the same design and size as you. Accidental swaps happen all the time and I can't sort it out if I can't see a name. I have plenty of vivids if you need to borrow one. Thanks for your support in this.

Working Bee
Saturday, 28th October we are having a Working Bee at school. The day starts at 8.00am and children are invited to come too. Morning tea and a BBQ lunch will be provided for our hard working volunteers. Many hands make light work.

Summer uniform
Summer uniforms are to be worn from Monday and this include correct sandals. As we are a sun smart school, a school hat must be worn at break times. There are no spares at school so you will need to bring your own. It's always a good idea to leave the hat in your bag - it avoids tears at lunchtime when kids are told to sit under a tree rather than play with their friends.

Year 2 Learning
This term the Year 2 team have some exciting things planned. We are going to be learning about symbols and how a symbol can be used to give messages. We'll look at road signs, Sign language, Christmas symbols... Much of our literacy and numeracy plans are based around ensuring that the incredible progress made this year is cemented for the long Christmas break. We will review different strategies, focus on good practices and check our learning goals.

Year 2 End of Year Picnic
We have decided to hold our picnic a little earlier this year - around week 5. We will need parent transport and help. So, we will release more information as soon as we have had our plans approved and completed the mountain of risk management paper work.

Rosary
October is the month of the Rosary. Each Wednesday morning we will begin the school day with a decade of the rosary. You are most welcome to join us. The junior school will be leading the Rosary in week 3. Children might like to bring their own Rosary beads - but only if they have them.

Swimming
We will be swimming in even weeks. Please bring togs, towel and a waterproof bag. The pool is heated to a gorgeous 30 degrees so we can swim everyday. Swimming is a large part of our PE programme and is not an option. I'm pretty good at teaching kids to swim - but I can't so it on dry land. Bring your togs!
